Shark Attack!

A waterslide drops down the front of a Mayan temple at Atlantis. They shoot out a level below, but at this level of the temple you can see a pool of sharks!Steven was super excited about this. He was really funny to watch. I think he got more excited about the sharks than he did sitting by the window on the plane! Steven didn't know I was videotaping him. In case you can't hear what he's saying, let me quote for you. "I'm convinced after watching Animals Gone Wild that it was going to jump up and bite me."

Atlantis

Right beside Marina village is the marina where all of the yachts port. These boats are insane to see up close!Atlantis is a large resort on Paradise Island. I'm assuming that it is supposed to resemble the Lost City of Atlantis, the underwater world! We explored the hotel and walked through the casino. There are several of these massive glass art pieces that are really cool!

Johnny Rockets

We took a cab ride over to Marina Village on Paradise Island. The village consists of a bunch of cute shops and restaurants. We found a familiar restaurant where we knew we could find our usual vacation meal...burgers and fries!
When the song "The Last Dance" came on, all the Johnny Rockets waitresses and waiters started dancing and singing. I guess we got dinner and a show!

Along the Waterfront

We've got a normal vacation routine down now. Each day we wake up, workout at the fitness center, hit the beach and the pool for a few hours, then shower and find someplace to go out to dinner and explore the sights. Saturday afternoon we took the bus back to downtown Nassau. We arrived early enough that the shops were still open.
We walked through some of the shops and then strolled along the waterfront where there are local vendors selling t-shirts, jewelry, and lots of knock-off designer goods.

Bahamas Beach Bums

Normally, I have trouble sitting still and relaxing. Weird, I know. You other "Type A" personalities out there know what I mean. But, for this vacation I truly wanted to sit back, relax, and enjoy a low key vacation!

So each day I have covered every inch in SPF 55 sunscreen (SPF 95 for my face), put on my big floppy hat, and grabbed my shades to spend a few hours reading on the beach. Vacation is the only time during the year when I actually take the time to sit back and read a book. I've made it through one book already, given to me just last week by my parents for my 26th birthday. I'm about a third of the way through book #2.
Steven is definitely in his element and enjoys soaking up the sun! Look at that stud!
There are lots of fun water activities to do in the area. Our hotel has free snorkeling equipment, kayaks, floats, and giant water tricycles available. We took the kayak out the first day, which was a lot of fun, but it's been so windy every other day we haven't yet had a chance to take the giant water tricycle for a spin! I am hoping we get a chance to before we leave. It looks so dorky, but oh so fun! We see quite a few boat tours, wave runners, and parasails from our view on the beach. The ocean is really shallow in this area and you can walk all the way out to the rope in the back of the picture and still stand up in the water. The ocean water is super clear, which I certainly prefer so I can see what exactly is in the water next to me. I did see some little fish, but that's about it, thankfully!

Domino's Delivers...even here!

Friday we spent another day lounging on the beach, reading, tanning (or trying not to sunburn), and swimming in the pool. We have been keeping up with our running and ran 4 miles in the hotel gym before hitting the outdoors.
For the evening, we decided to stay in and enjoy a delicious pepperoni pizza on the balcony of our hotel room. Yep, Domino's Pizza delivers...even in the Bahams!

Walking to Downtown Nassau

Thursday afternoon after running at the gym then spending a few hours at the beach and pools, we decided to venture to downtown Nassau. A hotel worker told us it wasn't within walking distance. Since everyone's definition of "walking distance" is different, we decided to still give it a try. We weren't in a hurry, and hey, we're in the Bahamas. Why not enjoy the beautiful scenery and sunny day?It was neat to get out of the touristy section and see other parts of the island. We saw residential areas, parks, stores, businesses, rundown hotels, abandoned homes and boarded up restaurants. Of course I didn't take pictures of those, but it was really interesting to see all of these places that have fallen by the wayside in this land of paradise. There would be a fancy home and then next door a boarded up rundown empty one that at one point in time was probably pretty nice.
We passed a cute area with restaurants and shopping about 10 minutes before we arrived to the downtown area. An hour and forty minutes later, we arrived at our destination, Conch Fritters in downtown Nassau. I have no idea how many miles it was, but certainly enough to rack up an appetite. Neither Steven nor I like seafood, so we pretty much stick to American food while we're traveling. It's always a safe bet! We're not big "foodies" so eating the local cuisine isn't one of our top priorities. These burgers that we ordered were massive! Steven didn't think I would come close to finishing mine. After only a small breakfast and lunch that day and a long walk, I was ready to prove him wrong! And I did, thank you very much. After dinner, we explored downtown Nassau. The shops close fairly early, at least by 5:30, so they were all closed by this time. We walked around and checked out where the cruise ships arrive.I thought this was quite a funny sign to have posted on the side of a building. By talking to a cashier, we learned that there is a public bus that runs from downtown Nassau to Cable Beach, where we are staying. For only $1.25 a person each way, we could save ourselves and hour and forty minute walk or a $15 cab ride. We'll definitely be taking advantage of this find for the remainder of our trip. My feet and my wallet were both thankful!
